A Beginning.

Hello.

My name is Chris Spann. I am, amongst other things, an occasional writer of words about video games (Mainly HERE), and a recent arrival in the world of Lordran.

Well, that's not true; a few months ago I started playing Dark Souls for the first time, but my stumbling idiocy left me in a position where I could reach the Taurus Demon, but was absolutely incapable of withstanding even a single one of his attacks. I had no souls, was level four, and hadn't even managed to kindle the first Bonfire in Undead Burg.

I gave up, and decided once again that Dark Souls wasn't for me; that it could frankly, fuck off and die.

Then I started listening to the Midnight Resistance Podcast. To hear Andi and Sean discuss the game made not returning to the game impossible, and this weekend just gone, I decided to start the game again - doing it properly, this time.

I blitzed through the opening sections of the game, to the same bonfire I mentioned previously (Kindling it this time), and then sailed past the Taurus Demon on my first attempt.

At that moment, I got it. I began to properly understand the game. I realised that the reason I wasn't enjoying the game is because I was treating it like every other game I'd ever played; not as some prickly titan that rewards you for taking your time, considering your options, and knowing that sometimes heading back and regrouping isn't failure; it's just making you stronger.

The game makes we want to write about it, but frankly I don't think any gaming site worth its salt would be interested in my semi-diarised scribblings about a game that is now fairly old; they've got Colonial Marines to shit all over now anyway. As such, I figured that a little Blogger-powered project would be a good place to talk about this incredible, awe-inspiring game; detailing my thoughts, progress and experiences in a world that is almost compulsively explorable. Join me as I babble shit about swords, demons and sun-praising, and feel free to comment and tell me about how stupid I am when I miss really obvious things.
